Description
Shelling attack by Sri Lankan Army on Thoddiyadi in Visuvamadu in the Mullaithivu District killed four civilians, among them Suthaskaran Sujitha, her brother and two more civilians. Frequent shelling attacks around the small area in which the IDPs (Internally displaced persons) of Vanni are crowded was resulting in heavy casualties on a daily basis. The displaced hospitals in this area were also coming under frequent attacks. The increase in the deadly shelling attacks on the crowded IDP population in Vanni was going on, unknown to the world due to the media blockade by the Sri Lankan Government to carry out its indiscriminate attacks on a scale that should otherwise receive top attention of the world media.
Legal situation (investigation/criminal proceedings)
The Sri Lankan armed forces have repeatedly struck hospitals in the northern Vanni region in indiscriminate artillery and aerial attacks. Commanders responsible for ordering or conducting such attacks may be prosecuted for war crimes, but no one was ever held accountable and there were no criminal proceedings in court. The Sri Lankan officers, who commanded it, and the responsible soldiers have not been convicted to this day.
