Description
Piratheepa Nagaratnam died in a claymore attack in Iyankulam Mullaithivu. The victim was a student at the GTM school in Iyankulam, the only school in the village. The upper school students at the GTM School received regular first aid training. With this training, the students regularly supported the medical staff at the nearby hospital in Alankulam. On November 27, 2007, the students were in an ambulance to provide first aid to people at Maveerar Naal, if necessary. The ambulance came under the mine attack by the Sri Lankan government. 6 students, two instructors and the driver were killed. Only one student could survive.
Legal situation (investigation/criminal proceedings)
So far, neither the Sri Lankan state nor the soldiers involved have been held accountable for the immense human rights violations. To date there have been no independent, international studies. Instead, senior officers were promoted to higher posts.
