Description
Shobana Jeevaratnam was killed along with her relatives by an indiscriminate bombardment on the “safe zone” by the Sri Lankan forces. In the so-called “safe zones” the Tamils should be safe from the bombing of the Sri Lankan army. Due to this reason many Tamils flew to the “safe zones”. But the Sri Lankan army took advantage of this and killed numerous Tamils in the “security zones” with targeted shelling and bombing. The former defense minister Gotabaya Rajapakse, who commanded many of these massacres, is the current president of Sri Lanka.
Shobana Jeevaratnam was one of the many victims in the “safe zones”.
Legal situation (investigation/criminal proceedings)
So far, neither the Sri Lankan state nor the soldiers involved have been held accountable for the immense human rights violations. To date there have been no independent, international studies. Instead, senior officers were promoted to higher posts.
