Description
On August 4, 2006, 17 humanitarian workers were likely killed by Sri Lankan security forces in Muttur, Trincomalee. Among those killed was Kavitha from Action contre la Faim (ACF), an organisation against hunger. They were lined up at a gate and promptly shot dead at the organization’s compound. Massacres of humanitarian workers are not uncommon in Sri Lanka.
Legal situation (investigation/criminal proceedings)
After the deaths of these aid workers, investigations began, only to be led to believe that the Sri Lankan judicial system was incapable of conducting further investigations, however the slain employees were identified. The crime was covered up by Sri Lanka’s top authorities. And the organization ACF believes that only an independent investigation could charge the assassins.
