Description
Civilians were killed by a series of artillery shells, multi-barrelled explosives, mortar and artillery shelling and a multiple launch rocket system by the soldiers.
After the Mullivaikkal and Puthumathalam areas were declared by the government as the final ‘safe zone’, soldiers fired explosives and phosphorus bombs at the bunkers. Hundreds of people were burned to ashes, unidentifiable.
The charred, unidentifiable bodies of hundreds of people who died in a targeted genocide attack were buried in bunkers set up in these areas. It is important to note that pregnant women suffered miscarriages due to the shock and vibration created by the bombs.
